Some years ago, three Amana men decided to revive an art that hasn’t been practiced in Amana for years – the art of brewing beer. Carroll Zuber and brothers, James and Dennis Roemig had a dream of building a small craft brewery to produce small batches of hand brewed beer reminiscent of Europe’s finest brews.

In 1985 Millstream Brewing Company opened its doors – the first brewery to operate in Amana since 1884 and the first craft brewery in Iowa. So the Millstream Brewery was born and became recognized as the home of quality brews and rewarding taste. Visit our brewery in the scenic Amana Colonies across from the Woolen Mill in the Main Amana Village. Enjoy the gemutlichkeit of the hospitality room/gift shop and sample our beers and sodas. Then relax and enjoy a beer in our outdoor hop-covered biergarten. In January 2001 the brewery was sold to its three current owners. Chris Priebe is our master brewer. He has brought 15 years of quality brewing experience to Millstream and is President of the company.

Teresa Albert is the Marketing and Distribution manager at Millstream. Tom Albert, our warehouse manager, does all the warehousing, keg work and bottling. Meet the rest of our team too! Dan Carpenter is our brewery cellar help, bottler and has been with us since 2002. Jerri Priebe does a great job at keeping our books (and all of us) straightened out. Denise Schulze, Tom McMire, Kelly Ipsen, Mike Bowan and Nick Stika are in the salesroom behind the counter during the weekdays and weekends. We are so fortunate to have this wonderful staff at Millstream Brewery.

As you see we are a small family owned business making it in the world of mainstream beers. As owners we are committed to making quality brews, one batch at a time. We hope to be able to reach out to local consumers in new and exciting ways. We’re still in Amana, making beer the way it should be... and we have the awards throughout the years to back it up. Come visit us sometime. Long live beer made in Iowa!

Millstream Iowa Pale Ale

India Pale Ale, or IPA, was originally brewed for export to India. British pale ales for the Indian Empire were made to a higher than normal strength, and given more hops to protect them on the journey. Today, the hoppiest examples of this style are made by the new generation of American brewers. The IPA’s are being brewed at 5.0% ACL/VOL plus and have become a popular style of beer in the U.S.

Our Iowa Pale Ale is a hoppy pale ale that we make with plenty of cascade hops from the west coats. We decided to name it Iowa Pale Ale because if you take the first letter of each word it is an “IPA” which fits the style of beer and that it is from Iowa. It is one of those names that gives it its local flavor, so we thought it appropriate to name a beer after it so that is full of localness.

Pale Ale’s on the coasts of this country are turning into hoppy monsters, but our beer is more mild and about balance. It has enough bitterness to match the maltiness provided by the pale malt base. It gets its citrus zing from extensive dry-hopping with Cascade hops. This beer was first made in a few small test batchers in 2003 as a summer seasonal beer. The response was so incredibly positive, that we have made it a year round beer.

Millstream Schild Brau Amber

This style of lager was developed by brewing pioneer Anton Dreher in Vienna, Austria during the mid-nineteenth century. It is pale red to deep amber in color, light to moderately hopped, and malty. This style is probably on of the world’s best food accompaniments along with wheat beers.

The name Schild Brau means essentially “Schild beer” in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Craft-brew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops, imported from Germany five it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing Company at its best.

Millstream John's Generations White Ale The origins of the Belgian Witbier (white beer) style can be traced to a 15th century monastery at what is now the Belgian town of Hoegaarden. It was here a brewing metropolis would emerge where by the 1800’s there were 30 breweries all making witbier.

The popularity of the style waned during the first half of the twentieth century and the beer was almost extinct by the early 1960’s. The Belgian Pierre Celis bought the last “white” beer brewery in Hoegaarden and launched a revival of the style bringing the style back to the world. By the mid-1980’s several breweries in the region were making similar beers but without distinctive orange peel and coriander spice.

Today, Belgian witbier is gained a large acceptance in the United States as a wonderful summertime drink. Our Belgian-style Witbier has a zesty orange aroma, soft body and a hint of coriander spice throughout.

We at Millstream Brewing Co. brew with the same techniques that made it famous 400 years ago, with only the finest ingredients and natural bottle conditioning.

Millstream Back Road Stout

There are many variations of the stout beer style. Some are dry and some are sweet, some hoppy. All have that common characteristic of a roasted flavor that sets them apart from any other style. Usually this roasted character comes from the use of roasted barley, which is barley grain that has not been malted, but rather highly kilned. One reason oatmeal stout is gaining popularity is that with its uniquely smooth texture and its rich, roasted, chocolate flavors, it simply tastes great.

This style was brewed through the 1950s in England, but lost popularity and eventually became extinct. Samuel Smith's Brewery brought it back into production in 1980.

Our Colony Oatmeal Stout Colony Oatmeal Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. But since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair at the brewery. The 'oatmeal' in the name is due the 10% oatmeal in the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouth feel, something definitely desirable in a stout! But the real secret is in our lager yeast. Most stout's are made using ale yeast, but we wanted ours to be as smooth as our lagers! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied stout, this beer is for you! We now only make the Stout in the colder months, because that is when it is the most popular. In the winter, you'll find it in stores in its own 'stout' packaging.

Millstream German Pilsner

Don't confuse our product with the mass marketed "pilsner" beers that are on supermarket shelves. The difference is flavor. Our beer is similar to that famous beer first enjoyed by the Czech people.

Pilsner is simple, and yet it is a beer of great finesse. Its not easy to make a beer pure enough to really let the hops stand out , but that is the goal of our pilsner. Our lager yeast produces a clean fermentation, which a produces light malt taste that lets the delicate aromatic flavors of the hops shine through. We use Czech Saaz hops that are a delight to the senses and impart an arousing aroma and satisfying flavor. The end result is a crisp refreshing beer that has a pleasant hoppy aftertaste.

Heferweisen

Now this is a Hefeweissen made for Iowa! We took a little liberty with putting a twist on the name and making ours a Hefe"r"weissen to fit in the whole Iowa thing we have going on at Millstream Brewery.

While we took liberties and played with the name, we did not compromise on making a true German Hefeweizen. As with a Hefeweizen, ours is quite sweet and fruity, with a full body. Our yeast produces the unique phenolic flavors of banana and cloves. It is very lightly hopped so it has little bitterness. The "Hefe" prefix means "with yeast", thus the beers unfiltered and cloudy appearance. "Weizen" means wheat.

Millstream Oktoberfest

This style of beer originated in Munich to celebrate the annual German Oktoberfest. In the old days before refrigeration, beer was brewed from the time of the barley harvest until the first warm month, March. When the harvest came again, any of 'last years' beer was consumed before the first new batches were ready. The event officially became known as Oktoberfest in the the early 1800's.

The style of this beer is balance between the desires to have a drinkable beer, and one that is strong enough to survive the long summer months in the cellar. Today we have modern refrigeration, but we still make this beer several months before the harvest so it can age properly.

Millstream's Oktoberfest is similar to the our Munich style Schild Brau Amber, but it has more flavor, is maltier, and darker in color. A truly special beer, to celebrate the harvest, an important part of life here in Amana. Join us for the Amana Colonies Oktoberfest and partake of a pint yourself!

Millstream Schokolade Bock

Just in time for the holidays is our special treat. A dark and chewy bock beer. Around November you'll find 'chocolate bock' on tap down at the brewery.

No other beer has a more pure and intense malt character as a true Bock. Many large breweries in the U.S. have diluted the original strength of this beer, but we make the real thing. The body of this beer is rich, making it a good beer to warm up to during those "special" Iowa winters. The blackened malt that we use in it gives the brew a slight hint of chocolate. Its a smooth brew, having been lagered for over a month in our cellars, in true bock style.
